Important Things to Consider When Planning Your Skylight Project

When you’re planning your skylight installation, there are a few important things to consider first:

Size: One of the most important decisions to make is the size of the skylight to install. As a good rule of thumb, we recommend dividing the square footage of the room by 20. That number will give you the approximate square footage of skylights you should choose.

Location: Next, think about the direction your skylight should face. If you want the greatest amount of light without significant heat loss or gain, opt for a north-facing skylight. A south-facing skylight, on the other hand, can lead to heat loss in the summer and gain in the winter. This can help keep your home at a comfortable temperature.

Mount type: Finally, think about the look you’re going for with your skylights. Flush-mounted skylights are flush with your roofline for a sleek look. A curb-mounted skylight has a frame that attaches to the window instead.

Different Types of Skylights

Another important decision to make is the type of skylight you want to install. There are three primary types of skylights you can choose from: fixed skylights, vented skylights, and tubular skylights.

Fixed Skylights

If you don’t care to open your skylight, opt for a fixed one. They give you plenty of natural light and a great view, but they don’t open. These are usually installed on a high ceiling.

Vented Skylights

While vented skylights look very similar to fixed ones, they can be opened to allow fresh air inside. You can opt for either manual or electronic controls, based on what’s most convenient for you.

Tubular Skylights

Also known as solar skylights, these are long tubes that help catch and reflect light into your home. They’re ideal for small spaces, but they don’t provide a nice view outside, unlike fixed and vented skylights.
